LATROBE University recently saw this years’ Graduation Ceremony become a family affair, as Director of LaTrobe University Shepparton, Elizabeth Lavender, graduated alongside her son Peter, both receiving Doctorates in their fields.
Completing a family of LaTrobe University graduates, the duo were proud to be beside one another as the ceremony saw Ms Lavender graduate with a Doctor of Education and her son, Peter, was honored with a Graduate Diploma In Education (Middle Years) and a Bachelor of Business.
“I’m so happy to be able to share this special day with Peter and my family. My husband Geoff graduated with a Master of Policy and Law in 1993 and my daughter Caroline received her Master of Public Health last year,” Elizabeth explained.
Ms Lavender says she was privileged to have worked in nursing education and at the Melbourne, Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo campuses as well as coordinating the offshore Bachelor of Nursing program in Hong Kong.
“Early in my career I was appointed a Nurse Unit Manager, which meant dealing with patients, their families and my own staff. Being in those high pressure situations taught me valuable lessons which have helped me in my various roles as lecturer, Deputy Dean and now as a Director,’ she says.
Elizabeth has continued to advocate higher education for rural students, and is delighted to have graduated alongside 74 other students, who received their awards on the day.
‘I am especially delighted to see Richard Welsh receive his Diploma of Business, as he is the first Indigenous student to use this pathway to enter the Bachelor of Accounting.’
