A NEW exercise and lifestyle management program designed to help Greater Shepparton residents ‘Beat’ lifestyle challenges is already making an impact on lives as classes began last week at Aquamoves in Shepparton.
Aimed at people within the community who cannot participate in the workforce due to lifestyle reasons, the Beat It lifestyle management program runs for 12 weeks and consists of an initial consultation, two weekly exercise sessions, each lasting one hour, one fortnightly lifestyle education session which focuses on health, active living, maintaining motivation, goal setting and nutritional information and a six month follow up session.
The currently running program is being held at Aquamoves in Shepparton on Mondays and Wednesdays from Monday, May 14 at 6pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday, May 15 at 10am, 1pm or 2pm, with more classes available soon.
Greater Shepparton City Council’s Healthy Communities Coordinator, Belinda Conna spoke with The Adviser saying it’s not too late to join an existing program and more programs are set to roll out until June 2013.
“Free to participants for the next two years under Council’s healthy communities program, Beat It classes are fun, safe and supportive.
“The idea is to teach participants exercises they can take home and continue.
“Combined with other physical activity, Beat It can help participants reduce the risk of diabetes and other lifestyle conditions.
“Participants have started to see some really positive results including a reduction in their waist circumference, improved fitness levels and for those participants living with diabetes, they have seen improvements in their blood glucose levels,” Ms Conna said.
