Club hosts two big start of year tournaments

THE start of the year saw two big days for the Murchison Bowls Club, with the club hosting both the inaugural Campbells Cup (CC) and the reformed Presidents Cup tournament.

On Friday, January 4, 18 teams converged on the club to compete on good grass greens for the inaugural CC. The CC trophy and prize money, sponsored by Campbells Australia, was won by Barry Ibbott’s team from Hilltop Bowls Club with the runner-up being the trio from Rushworth whose power play of eight shots got them over the last hurdle.

Murchison Bowls Club president, Geoff Higgins said, “A couple of new innovations were trialled with great success and bowlers having a lot of good fun and banter.”

On the Saturday, the club hosted the Presidents Cup tournament, which is sponsored by WIZZ Coating. Twenty teams competed in cooler but very blustery conditions with the final washout being 5/3 game winners playing off for the coveted trophy and cash prize. Two teams from Euroa, the Murchison team, Shepp Golf team and Stanhope team played a three end play-off with the Stanhope team of Jenny Crilly, Peter Sherman and Berry Fletcher out-bowling their Euroa opposition of Bill O’ Conner, Peter O’ Connor and Bruce Doherty.

Geoff said, “A great day had by all and many thanks to the catering girls and club members who filled in the discrepancy of team numbers at short notice. As usual, Lester did a tireless job as tournament manager.”
