IN a region that is greatly steeped in a deep cultural heritage which is due to a richly layered history that dates back over 40,000 years, the Greater Shepparton City Council who recently initiated a Heritage Advisory Committee are now seeking nominations from the community to become members. The committee will meet once a month and act as an advocate for cultural heritage matters within the municipality, with a primary purpose to provide advice to Council on the best methods to conserve and promote Greater Shepparton’s unique cultural heritage including policy matters relating to cultural heritage, giving advice on the identification, conservation, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage significance and issues and investigate funding opportunities. Greater Shepparton Councillor and Heritage Advisory Committee member Cr Jenny Houlihan said cultural heritage within Greater Shepparton connects each of us with our past and tells the story of who we are as a community. “Respect for our cultural heritage involves retaining and managing places that have significance to us as a community. The conservation of these places of cultural heritage significance will ensure their protection for present and future generations to view, interpret and appreciate. “Knowledge and interest from the community is vital and I encourage those people in the community with an interest in cultural heritage to apply for one of the three community positions on the committee,” Cr Houlihan said. Application forms should be returned by 5.00pm on Friday, February 10 and are available from Council’s Welsford Street office or by phoning 5832 9823.
