As we head into the next decade, climate change is beginning to shape any number of things that we do in our daily life.

So it is that Greater Shepparton City Council has taken a proactive measure towards setting a community example. In a recent upgrading of some council vehicles, they have acquired two new all electric vehicles to join the fleet.

According to Greater Shepparton City Council CEO, Peter Harriott, “The whole of life cost of the vehicles makes them a good decision and we want to show the feasibility of using electric vehicles in regional Victoria. We have solar panels on the roof of the council building that feed into the recharge station here and it will be the same at the new SAM where we will have three recharge stations.”

The vehicles are new Nissan Leaf sedans which are 100% electric and produce 110kW of power with a range of approximately 200km before needing a recharge.

“Drivers will need to plan ahead in considering the power storage capabilities but for driving over the council area we believe they will be more than adequate,” said Peter. The vehicles do have the capability to be charged from any powerpoint however it is much slower than through the recharge station.
