BACK in 2015, GOTAFE realised that there were various competitions in our region that celebrated the great things that we do around food and wine, however there was nothing that showcased the talent that we have in the field of coffee – those who make, roast it, live and breathe it.
Now in its third year, the annual GOTAFE Barista Competition aims at highlighting ‘the best’ in coffee, and is open to all cafés and restaurants in Shepparton. This year the competition will take place as part of the Shepparton Winter Festival in the Maude Street Mall, and the general public can get involved and come along to see who is the best of the best in our town!
There are a lot of talented and passionate Baristas in this area, and it is a fun way of letting them showcase their talents, network with their peers, and encourage some friendly rivalry amongst the businesses and the baristas themselves.
The GOTAFE events students, along with their trainer, Claire Taylor, will assist in setting up and running the event on the day as part of both the Certificate III and Diploma of Events programs. This provides the students real work outcomes and hands on experience of what it is like to plan and run an event, and forms part of their assessment for their course.
GOTAFE’s Annual Barista Competition is proudly sponsored by Direct Hospitality and Conti’s Dairy. Hosted by GOTAFE Hospitality Department and students, the competition will be judged on presentation, cleanliness, time and taste, with three coffee styles to be presented to the expert panel of judges. The Barista Competition will be held as part of the Winter Market. Please complete your registration by August 21 at www.gotafe.vic.edu.au/baristacomp/
