RECENTLY, the Goulburn Valley League (GVL) participated in the Netball Victoria Association Championships at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Melbourne, performing so well that they have been named one of the top four leagues in Victoria.
The GVL recorded only one loss during the round robin stage of the championships, including beating arch-rival SS&A Ovens & Murray FNL, who beat the GVL during the recent interleague weekend.
Such dominant performances saw the GVL qualify for the finals of the championships.
Unfortunately, the GVL lost by a solitary goal to the Bellarine FNL in the semi-final, which ended their championships for another year.
The championship final featured Bellarine FNL and Bendigo FNL, with Bendigo FNL winning 18 to 14, to become the Netball Victoria Association Champions for 2017.
This marks the third year in a row in which the GVL has made it to the final four of the Netball Victoria Association Championships, showcasing the exceptional talent of Goulburn Valley Netball.
Coach, Tracey Brereton was extremely proud of her team, despite the close loss.
“While we did not get the result that we wanted, the girls played really well all day.
“We fought hard all day, in what I believe was a really tough draw, so to make the finals was an extraordinary effort.
“To lose in the semi-final by one goal after a penalty in the final 10 seconds is heartbreaking, but that is the sport.
“The team should be proud of what they achieved, and hopefully we can return next year and win it.”
