Harness racing returns to country tracks

Editor July 20, 2011

Harness racing will return to six regional racing clubs Minister for Racing, Denis Napthine confirmed last week.
He revealed that Harness Racing Victoria plans to reintroduce race meetings to Boort, Gunbower, Ouyen, St Arnaud, Wangaratta and Wedderburn racetracks.
Mr Napthine said the move will provide jobs and attract visitors to the areas.
“It is vital to the social fabric of these towns,” Dr Napthine said.
“I understand the audit carried out by Harness Racing Victoria indicates several of the tracks could be brought up to appropriate standards early next year while others might take a longer period.
“I will now be holding discussions with Harness Racing Victoria and with the six local clubs to determine detailed funding requirements and establish a timeline for the reintroduction of racing to these areas.”
