Interesting U3A event not to be missed

THIS Friday, the Goulburn Valley U3A (GVU3A) will be welcoming Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne as their guest speaker, who will talk on his life and research among other things.

Professor Doherty received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine jointly with Rolf M Zinkernagel in 1996 and was named Australian of the Year in 1997. He received a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1997 and has been named as a living national treasure.

Professor Doherty’s research focuses on the immune system and his Nobel work described how the body’s immune cells protect against viruses.

Being the first veterinarian to win a Nobel Prize, Professor Doherty is still active in research on immunity to influenza. He commutes between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the Peter Doherty Institute at the University of Melbourne where he spends most of his research time.

GVU3A publicity officer, Elizabeth Lee said, “GVU3A is excited and privileged to be able to host such an eminent speaker.

“The talk is hosted by John Dainton and questions will be encouraged. We invite the community to come along.”
