CADEL Evans’ historic 2011 Tour de France victory will be celebrated in Melbourne with a public lunchtime event on Friday.
Announcing the event last week, Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu invited local cycling fans, sporting enthusiasts and proud Victorians to come together and congratulate the sporting hero.
“Cadel is coming home especially for this event, which will include a short bike ride and a celebration at Federation Square where Victorians will have a wonderful opportunity to yell for Cadel,” Mr Baillieu said.
“Victorians who watched Cadel’s victory were inspired and had their spirits lifted by his resilience, perseverance and sheer guts.
“Now they will have an opportunity to honour this inspirational Victorian champion in person.”
Evans was the first Australian to win ‘The Tour’ and is only the third non-European race champion in the race’s 98-year history.
Australia Post will also honour his win with a special release souvenir stamp sheet.
