FOLLOWING the devastation left behind from tornados, which touched down across parts of northern Victoria recently, clean up efforts are well underway and tales of the disaster are surfacing across the state.
Local Shepparton resident, Proprietor of Shepparton Optical Services and President of the Shepparton Golf Club, Alan Schmedje was in Mulwala the night the tornado ripped its way through the townships caravan park, telling The Adviser it was his third year going there for a fishing trip, but this was definitely one of the most exciting.
“We were at the Ski Club for tea when the tornado ripped through the caravan park we were staying at.
“We started getting reports there was damage done and the emergency services set us up in an evacuation centre.
“There was a bit of confusion as to what had really happened and what damage had been done.
“We ended up going back to Shepparton that night and returned the following day and there was debris everywhere on the lead up to Mulwala. When we arrived everything was upside down and there were cabins on top of each other. “There were only a few cabins that were pretty well untouched and ours was lucky enough to have been one of them.
“We were really lucky because we were all ok and we managed to get all of our gear.
“The owners of the caravan park made contact with everybody who was staying there to make sure they were safe and emergency crews were very well organised and exceptionally trained and did a wonderful job maintaining order.
“We’re looking forward to what will be on offer next year,” Alan said.
