Man, 22, dies in Mooroopna collision

David Lee January 14, 2015

A 22-year-old Shepparton man has died overnight following a two car collision in Mooroopna just after 11:30pm, bringing the 2015 provisional road toll to 10, two of those in the Greater Shepparton region.
It is believed the man was driving east along McLennan Street in a Mazda sedan before losing control and veering onto the opposite side of the road, colliding with a Mitsubishi van travelling west.
The 22-year-old driving the Mazda died at the scene, while the male driver of the van was taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Shepparton Police Highway Patrol, Sergeant Janne Kennedy said, “We’re investigating whether speed, fatigue, alcohol or hoon driving were factors with both the fatalities in the region so far. The two fatalities we’ve had so far is a terrible start for this year. It’s terrible for the families involved and for the emergency services attending.
“Last Wednesday out at Invergordon, we clocked a driver travelling over 160km/h in a 100km/h zone. Her vehicle was impounded; but unfortunately we are still seeing speed as a major contributing factor in accidents.
“We would like to urge the community to take care when behind the wheel.
“We had a great Christmas period, but we need people to be diligent on the roads.”
