AFTER 16 years as St Brendan’s Parish Priest, Monsignor Peter Jeffrey held his final mass in Shepparton last Sunday before leaving for Auckland, New Zealand to take up his new role as Rector of the National Holy Cross Seminary.
Monsignor Jeffrey was ordained at Sacred Heart Cathedral in his home town of Bendigo in 1963 and worked as an Assistant Priest at parishes in Beechworth, Heathcote, Cohuna and Shepparton. After spending twelve years at Corpus Christi Provincial Seminary in Australia beginning as a member of staff and being appointed Rector from 1978 to 1984, he was taken on as a staff member of the Pacific Regional Seminary in Fiji before becoming Rector in 1989, a position held until 1993. It was in 1994 Monsignor Jeffrey became Parish Priest at St John’s Catholic Parish in Euroa before joining St Brendan’s in 1995.
Throughout his time at the parish in Shepparton Monsignor Jeffery has performed over 1000 baptisms, 478 wedding ceremonies and 544 funerals, telling The Adviser to represent people, relationships and families was the most important part of being a priest.
“It’s not easy to say goodbye and I will be leaving with a lot of admiration for people in Shepparton and its strong community of social service.
“I would like to say a big thank you to the people of this community who have made my ministry enriching and I ask for people’s prayers for my new responsibility as Rector of the National Holy Cross Seminary in New Zealand,”
