Netballers to benefit from development academy

YOUNG netballers in the Goulburn Murray region are set to receive a boost with the commencement of a new Junior Netball Development Academy in 2019.

An initiative of AFL Goulburn Murray, the establishment of a Junior Development Academy will benefit individuals, clubs, associations and junior coaches.

Key focus areas of the program include quality based player development to support and complement club, league and netball associations, increase the depth of talent within the region by exposing more players to a higher level of training, participation and coaching, influence the behaviour and values of young players by providing a high-quality training and playing environment and to involve and support the personal development of regionally based netball coaches in the program for the betterment of future netball athletes.

The Netball Academy program also welcomes Tatura Milk on board as our major partner which will complement their sponsorship of the AFL Goulburn Murray Junior Football Academy.

AFL Goulburn Murray Netball Academy co-ordinators, Melissa Wells and Peita Sleeth are excited about the prospect of growing junior netball in the region.

“The aim of the Academy is to ‘connect’ the pathway in a more coordinated manner and to provide a structured and focused development program for the selected participants and coaches,” Melissa and Peita said.

“The program will consist of 12 sessions overall at each age group with a focus on skill development, game sense and personal growth.

“It is also fantastic to have Tatura Milk on board as partner of the netball academy, becoming the AFL Goulburn Murray Junior Academy partner for both football and netball development in the region.”

The program will officially commence in February 2019, with trials having already been conducted in November 2018.

“Coaches and selectors were very impressed with the high level of skill and effort demonstrated by all players through trials, which made selection of athletes for the academy extremely difficult,” Melissa and Peita said.

“Overall, this is an exciting addition to the netball community and we are looking forward to a high service being provided to Academy participants through 2019 and beyond.”
