AFTER more than 20 years of senior management experience in local government and serving the past three years as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at City of Wodonga, recently appointed Greater Shepparton City Council CEO, Gavin Cator is a man of many strengths.
Mr Cator holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Graduate Diploma in Municipal Engineering and has been heavily involved in the Ovens and Murray Football League, becoming president of the league and holding the title for three years before becoming a member of the board.
Greater Shepparton City Council announced Mr Cator as the new CEO on November 15 2011 and finishing up with Wodonga Council on December 19, he took up his new role on January 16 of this year.
Mr Cator said he was looking forward to the challenge and to returning to the Goulburn Valley telling The Adviser of his passion for local sports and his experience in local government, including his 10 and a half years with Moira Shire Council.
“It has worked out well as my life plan was to always come back to the area and it’s great to be so warmly welcomed by council, staff and the community.
“I believe Greater Shepparton, as a region and an organisation, is well positioned to capitalise on the challenges of the short and longer term future and I am looking forward to being a part of that,” Mr Cator said.
Mr Cator is a graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program and the Fairley Leadership Program and has served in sector leadership roles including president of Local Government Professionals in Victoria and national director of Local Government Managers Australia, a clear demonstration of his passion for leadership development.
