REAL and imaginary forests will climb the walls of SAM as participants focus on art-making and the environment during the 2019 SAM Education Lab with artist and landscape designer, Heather Hesterman presenting GreenLab.

Commencing on March 1 and running through to April 7, GreenLab is an evolving exhibition that will transform the gallery space on a weekly basis. Students’ work will unfold within this space over five weeks, providing everyone with the opportunity to see works grow in the modified SAM open-lab style exhibition space.

Throughout this time at SAM, visitors will also be able to observe and create art in the gallery space. Heather has provided a collection of her work, which will be exhibited in the glass cabinet space. Students and visitors alike can use Heather’s collection as inspiration and a guide to create their own little masterpieces.

It’s not very often you’ll get the chance to draw on the walls of an art gallery. GreenLab offers members of the community the opportunity to create their own expansive and ever-changing forest on one of SAM’s walls. Similarly, students will also have the opportunity to research and create with clay and other materials through guided workshops with Heather.

Artist and landscape designer, Heather Hesterman explained that visitors to SAM will also be encouraged to engage with water and plant structures and to observe the micro/macro scale of plants, water and earth.

“The exhibit is a great conversation-starter for students, schools and families and encourages everyone to closely observe our earth within space,” Heather said.

La Trobe Shepparton head of campus, Elizabeth Capp said, “La Trobe University is delighted to be supporting such a unique interactive arts program for young people. We are grateful for the work-placement and volunteering opportunities it gives our students in Shepparton.”

Heather Hesterman’s lab is also a proud part of the ART+CLIMATE = CHANGE 2019 Festival. Presented by CLIMARTE, the mission of the festival is to activate communities on climate change and acts as a catalyst for organisations to engage in climate-related and socially engaged exhibitions and events.

The official opening of 2019 SAM eduLAB, supported by La Trobe University, will take place this Thursday, February 28, from 6pm to 8pm, as part of the broader SAM Local suite of exhibitions. A feature of this evening, not to be missed, is to meet and listen to Heather Hesterman during her artist talk from 5pm to 6pm. Bookings are essential. To check out SAM Local, the GreenLab space and other exhibitions on offer at SAM, visit 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton or give them a call on 5832 9861.
