A 23-year-old woman was shot multiple times by police in Regent Street, Shepparton on Friday.
The woman who was allegedly wielding a knife at the time was taken to Goulburn Valley Health before being airlifted to The Alfred Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.
The woman had allegedly attempted to attack several drivers with the knife in the The Boulevard near the corners of Regent and Allambi Streets at around 3pm.
After police were called to the scene the woman turned her advance on two officers present who told her to drop the knife.
When the woman ignored their appeal the Sergeant and Constable used capsicum spray in an attempt to control the woman.
When the woman maintained her advance, the officers shot the woman in the arm and leg.
The Boulevard between Knight Street and Balaclava Road and intercepting streets remained closed into the night as investigations at the scene were carried out under lights.
The Ethical Standards Department and Homicide Squad are continuing their investigations of the incident being overseen by the Office of Police Integrity.
