IT was a weekend of ‘firsts’ for Shepparton local V8 Supercar Driver, Garry Jacobson at the opening round of the 2014 Dunlop V8 Supercar Series at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
Finishing the weekend in fifth place, Jacobson started the weekend on the pace from the outset, finishing third in the opening practice, opening some eyes along pit lane and setting the tone for a successful weekend.
A separate qualifying session for each race was held due to there being 30 cars in the field and with only 15 minutes to clock the best possible time, the pressure was on from the outset.
At the end of the short session, Jacobson finished eleventh, equalling his best ever qualifying result and this is where he would start in the 40 minute race.
Jacobson moved his way up to ninth in the twilight race but was caught out by the new and confusing safety car restart rule and dropped back to eleventh by the end of the race.
Moving back up to ninth during the qualifying for ‘race two’ in his best ever qualifying result, Jacobson then battled it out on the track, charging ahead to finish in fifth, his best finish yet.
Jacobson said, “I have set myself a goal of finishing in the top 10 consistently, but I always thought that if I was able to get in the top five it would be like winning Bathurst.”
Jacobson now sits in seventh place in the championship standings.
The next round of the Dunlop Series will be held at Jacobson’s home track, Victoria’s Winton Motor Raceway from April 4 to 6.
