Review of waterway speed limits

When a water playground is a home to both powered and non-powered water-craft, unless there is some level of regulation, the possibility of serious safety incidents occurring is ever-present. Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn River are two such water playgrounds affected.

To that end, Strathbogie Shire Council and the Goulburn Murray Water and Maritime Safety, Victoria have made a decision to undertake a review and is now seeking to get a consultant on board to manage the project.

Users of these waterways will have the opportunity to input into the upcoming speed limit and zoning review of the waterways.

Nagambie Lakes Ward Councillor, Debra Bowers said, “We have seen a significant boom in tourism and development in Nagambie and the number of vessels, both powered and non-powered sharing the waterways has caused a number of serious safety concerns for the community and the visitors.

“It is now time to consider the current challenges and opportunities for recreational use of the waterways and have a conversation about what needs to be done.”

Any rule change that comes from the investigation will be gazetted in the Victorian Government Gazette and in the Vessel Operating and Zoning rules for Victorian waters.
