Formally dubbed ‘Adopt a Schools Program’, the SRC in conjunction with Goulburn Valley Grammar School are aiming to increase the number of school children taking part in rowing, with a hope that some will go on to become Australian representatives of the sport.
President of the Shepparton Rowing Club, David Schier lodged the application in the hope it would boost the profile of rowing saying the program is another positive development in support of the Greater Shepparton Council’s crucial decision in 2008 to reform the lake and foster passive water sports again.
“I am very pleased to make this announcement on the verge of rowing boats returning to Victoria Park Lake.” Mr Schier said.
The Principal of Goulburn Valley Grammar School, Mark Torriero said that the program would form a part of the school sports curriculum for terms one and two in 2012.
“Our school is delighted that this program has been offered to our senior students as it creates a water sports option for them” he said.
