AFTER re-formation of Shepparton’s Victoria Park Lake, a sport formerly embraced by local community is set to return.
A public meeting is being held today for the re-establishment of Shepparton Rowing Club originally established in 1884.
With diminishing reliable flows in the Goulburn River and choking of the lake with weeds before the re-formation, the club folded with nowhere for its members to practise.
The club’s boathouse was dismantled and Aquamoves Lakeside complex was built where it formerly stood.
With the advent of a 600 x 80 metre rowing channel as part of the re-formation, local rowing enthusiasts including David Scheir, who was Chair of the Lake Users Groups that headed the campaign to re-develop the precinct, have gathered to re-establish the club.
“It’s just a perfectly located venue where we hope to see both rowing and small boat sailing returning after an absence of almost 20 years,” Mr Schier said.
The public meeting will be held from 7pm at GOTAFE Board Room, 152 Fryers Street.
