Passionate residents and community members gathered in the small town of Wanalta last week to take part in a range of events aimed at raising much-needed awareness and funds.

First off, the fifth Shearing for Kids with Cancer event was a huge success. Organised by Bill and Katrina Ogden and Bill and Val Barlow, the event raised money for children’s charity, My Room.

Following their exceptional efforts of raising $43,000 at last year’s event, My Room challenged Hawthorn premiership football player, Shane Crawford, to chip in and grab the clips.

A country boy at heart, Shane sure looked the part, stepping in to do his bit and help shear through some of the 700 sheep, which move through the clippers on the day.

Further to raising funds for children’s health, the mental health of regional farmers received spotlight focus as part of the Farmer’s Wellness Day event, which ran in conjunction with the shearing event at Waranga Medical Centre.
