DUE to several incidences where the CFA have been dispatched to locations kilometres away from a reported emergency, a section of Shepparton-Euroa Road is set to be renamed to Coach Road.
In March 2013, the CFA wrote to Greater Shepparton City Council advising of the safety issues and requesting a proactive approach for renaming Shepparton– Euroa Road, which council responded to, explaining the impracticality of the renaming.
The issue was again raised by the CFA in July 2013, who wrote to council stating that the issue was of the highest importance for any emergency service, including volunteers, responding to locations only to find they are actually kilometres away from the event they have been dispatched too.
At the council meeting last week, councillors voted to pass the name change, opting to rename the section of road to Coach Road as it was part of the former Cobb & Co Coach route.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson said, “At the recent council meeting, council passed the recommendation to change the name from Shepparton–Euroa Road for Shepparton to be replaced with Coach Road.
“The Heritage Advisory Committee last year suggested the name of Coach Road after the Country Fire Authority requested that council make the change to the road name.
“This road was used by Cobb & Co Coach in the 1900s and we believe it is appropriate.”
Council will now consult with the wider community regarding the replacement name of Coach Road, which will include letters to all affected owners and occupiers.
