MUSHERS from all over Australia competed in the twenty-first annual Sled Dog Dash at Moira Park, Kialla West at the weekend, the last event managed by its founding coordinators David and Helen Pettifer of Shepparton.
The couple, the region’s only mushers, started the event in 1990 after developing a love for the Huskies and later the sport 25 years ago.
“We bought a Huskie as a pet and decided that because that’s what they enjoy doing we would have a go at it,” Mrs Pettifer said. “We love it.”
The couple will continue racing but are retiring from managing the event to “have a break”.
Before handing over the reigns to another sled dog club, both were determined to ensure involvement of up and coming mushers in the event.
This year’s competition saw the addition new categories, Juniors for mushers aged 11-15. and Pee Wee and Mini Pee Wee categories for children under 11 racing with a parent.
