After an emotional 15-month campaign, Toolamba community last week welcomed news of a $450,000 State Government grant to help rebuild the town’s kindergarten destroyed by fire last year.
Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development and Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell said at the funding commitment: “Costings are yet to be finalised and the State Government is committed to working with the local community to find a solution to fund any shortfall.”
Days later City of Greater Shepparton Chief Executive, Phil Pearse said that although Council supported Toolamba’s bid for State funding, costs remaining were not Council’s responsibility.
Ms Lovell highlighted that a new kinder is essential for Toolamba community families.
“The fire that destroyed the Toolamba Kindergarten and primary school on 3 February 2010 was a major blow to the local community,” Ms Lovell said.
The State’s contribution, insurance money and donations total $670,000.
