MOOROOPNA North Primary School students have come up with a new initiative to support the region’s less fortunate pensioners.
Members of the school’s Student Council earlier this year decided to collect everyday non-perishable items donated by students at the school, to go to Mooroopna Hub community centre for distribution to pensioners doing it tough.
“This is about us giving back to the community,” Mooroopna North Grade 6 student, Kegan Merrigan said.
“It feels really good to be able to help them.”
The unofficial Adopt a Pensioner program, not part of the official charity scheme, will be continued indefinitely after its success says Principal, Geoff Newman.
“It was very encouraging to see the amount of items donated in just one term,” Mr Newman said.
“The school is already a supporter of Guide Dogs Victoria, Jeans for Genes Day and we’ve sponsored children abroad. This came about because the students wanted to do something for other locals. It’s been fantastic to see their enthusiasm.”
