In a first for Victoria, the opening of the new Family Violence Court in Shepparton is a positive move by the government in response to the issues and the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Attorney General, Jill Hennesey MP attended the Shepparton court to open the re-purposed 1930 courthouse as a safe waiting space for applicants and their families.

Within the complex are waiting rooms as well as conference rooms where applicants can meet with their legal representatives as required. Also included is a video conferencing room that allows applicants to deliver their testimony to the court via video link.

“We don’t want to extend the trauma that victim-survivors of family violence have to endure,” said the Attorney General.

The Shepparton facility is the first of five specialist Family Violence Courts to be opened across Victoria.
