Up in flames

PREPARING FOR THE WORST… Firefighters at Shepparton Fire Station complete some training in the street. Photo: Lost Shepparton.

AS we come to the end of summer and hopefully the end of the bushfire season, we thought we’d take a look back at the effects of fire around Greater Shepparton. Despite being a fairly dry and humid region surrounded by bushland and dry land, we have been fortunate enough not to have experienced the devastation of a bushfire. Of course, this does not mean we will always be so lucky.

What we have seen is our fair share of building fires and grass fires, which thankfully have been put out by our local ‘fireys’ before anyone could get hurt.

One of the biggest and most memorable fires is that of the old Shepparton Hotel building in 2007. The Shepparton Hotel dates back to the 1860s, with the second storey (and most current façade) being built in the early 1900s. The historic building’s top storey went up in flames on December 2, 2007, and has remained a rather unfortunate sight ever since.
