Organ donation encouraged

FUNDING for initiatives that enhance community awareness of organ and tissue donation is being provided to the tune of $750,000.

Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, is encouraging community groups, local businesses, and not-for-profit organisations to apply for grants of up to $50,000 to help promote the importance of donation.

Mr Drum said the grants could also fund creative measures that promote discussion among family and friends about donation, or activities that encourage more people to sign up on the Australian Organ Donor Register.

“Organ and tissue donation are life-saving and life-changing for recipients, yet there are still 13 million eligible Australians who have not yet registered their decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register,” Mr Drum said.

“We know nine out of ten families will agree to organ donation if their loved one is registered and they’ve spoken about it as a family, so these types of grants are crucial in helping us get the message out, and ultimately saving the lives of people on the Australian transplant wait list.”

Applications can be made in one of three categories:

1. Broad-reaching national events

2. Media, public relations, or digital activities

3. Research/behavioural change projects or the development of education resources.

Applications for this funding round close November 19, 2021. Multi-year funding of up to three years is available for national events applications. Successful applicants will be announced in February next year.
