In September 2019, Deb Bower and Robert Cardalish took on their best renovation yet, the old Murchison Bank on River Road, Murchison. This heritage listed, but also derelict building, came with many challenges for the passionate renovators with the latest one taking them by surprise.
The Shepparton Council has ordered them to remove the new cast iron fence and urns by December 6 or they will take them to VCAT to enforce the removal.
The planning department determined the fence has a detrimental impact on the significance of the former bank building and the Murchison central township precinct.
“We have worked very hard to save, repair and enhance this heritage building in a way that is sympathetic to the era and to protect it from further deterioration,” said owner Deb Bower.
Deb and Robert have taken the issue to the local community for help. To date there are over 300 handwritten and online signatures relating to the petition of saving their fence.
If you would like to help Deb and Robert head to the Murchison Victoria Community Facebook page and search for their petition and link.
