MUSIC memory box is an intergenerational music playgroup program developed by musician Wendy Russell. It usually runs on a fortnightly basis, but given the limitations over the past two years, only five sessions were able to go ahead in 2021.
Despite this, the last session of the year, held last week, gave attendees a chance to celebrate Christmas and feel the joy this time of year provides.
Menarock Life Shepparton Aged Care lifestyle facilitator Kathy Warren, told us just how much these playgroup sessions mean to the residents.
“The residents are so excited on the morning of the sessions and talk about it all afternoon once they’re over. They just love it, it’s such a beautiful opportunity for them to socialise with young children as many of them don’t really have visitors in that age group,” said Kathy.
“It lightens the mood and all the residents get involved. Wendy is wonderful at ensuring the singing and activities provide many opportunities for both the children and residents alike to be involved.”
Founder Wendy is looking forward to resuming in 2022 and witnessing the immense benefits the program has for all participants.
“Many of the songs are ones which the residents will remember from their own childhoods or from their days of being parents to young children. It makes the residents feel very special and at the end of each session we ask the children to go around the room shaking hands and saying goodbye to each of the residents, its really lovely.”
The ability for young and old alike to come together and enjoy music in a relaxed social setting is a welcome return to normalcy and a chance for all involved to forge unforgettable bonds.
