REGARDLESS of recent cooler weather, temperatures have again risen across the region. This, coupled with significant grass fuel loads brought about by higher-than-average rainfall, renders the risk of fast running grassfires still present.

CFA would like to issue a reminder that the Fire Danger Period is still in force. During the Fire Danger Period fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit.

The penalties for lighting fires illegally during the Fire Danger Period and on Total Fire Days include large fines and possible imprisonment. Authorities take a zero-tolerance approach to anyone caught breaching fire restrictions.

“Unfortunately, there has been some recent incidents where residents have not complied with current restrictions, which has required police and fire brigade attendance” CFA District 22 commander Mark Narayan said. District 22 encompasses the Shire of Moira, City of Greater Shepparton and Shire of Strathbogie.

Further information can be found at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/can including what can and can’t be used or done during the Fire Danger Period. Currently, local permits are not being issued but to check whether permit applications are being considered, apply for, and notify of the use of a permit to burn, Victorians should visit the Fire Permits Victoria website www.firepermits.vic.gov.au.

Farmers can find legal guidelines and practical advice at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/planprepare/how-to-prepare-your-property/farms. This information is important especially for new farmers, bush block owners or hobby farmers.
