SPRING is here, bringing warmer weather, longer days and the perfect opportunity to give your home and garden a freshen-up before summer arrives. From getting the garden ready for new growth to tackling those easily forgotten areas inside the home, a little spring cleaning can make a big difference.
In the garden
- Get planting! While the ground is still moist and the sun is shining, spring is the ideal time to get new plants in the ground. It is also a great time to sow seeds, including herbs, fruit, leafy greens and flowers to add a pop of colour to your garden.
- Weed and prune. Spring brings brilliant blooms, but unfortunately, weeds too. Pull small weeds out by hand while wearing gardening gloves, making sure to remove the entire root or attack with weed killer, if you’d prefer. Prune shrubs, trees and plants as needed to encourage healthy new growth.
- Refresh your mulch. Add a fresh layer of mulch around shrubs and garden beds to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and keep the soil cool as temperatures rise. Top up soil around plants where needed.
- Tidy outdoor areas. Sweep paths, patios and verandahs, clear away fallen leaves and remove cobwebs from walls, eaves and other exterior areas. A long-handled broom can make light work of hard-to-reach spots.

Around the house
- Refresh your kitchen. Pay particular attention to the nooks and crannies that are easily overlooked. Vacuum crumbs from cutlery drawers, wipe down shelves, surfaces and drawers, pull out appliances to clean behind them and give the fridge a thorough clean.
- Dust ceiling fans. Wipe down fan blades and fittings so they are ready for regular use during the warmer months.
- Clean your screens. Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth with warm, soapy water to remove dust and cobwebs. Window screens can also be gently rinsed with a house or pressure washer on a light setting.
- Organise the pantry. Take stock of your ingredients, move older items to the front and dispose of anything expired. Vacuum and wipe shelves to remove crumbs and residue, making sure everything is completely dry before re-stocking.
- Freshen soft furnishings. Wash or air cushions, throws and removable covers, and give rugs and carpets a thorough vacuum. Opening windows on a mild day can also help freshen the whole home.
- Declutter as you go. Spring cleaning is a great opportunity to sort through cupboards, drawers and storage areas. Donate items you no longer use and dispose of anything broken or past its useful life.
With a little preparation now, your home and garden will be fresh, organised and ready to enjoy throughout the warmer months of summer entertaining, Christmas and holidays.
