GV Health has launched “Inside ED – Your Emergency Department Explained,” a new multimedia series helping the community understand how emergency care works.
Last year, Shepparton Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) recorded over 43,000 presentations. With demand continuing to grow, GV Health wants patients to feel informed and prepared before they walk through the doors.
The series tackles common questions, with GV Health’s ED team explaining how the department works and why certain decisions are made.
One question the ED team regularly hears is why triage, and not arrival time, determines who is seen first.
“Every patient is assessed fairly, and the sickest patients are treated first,” said Kim Read, Divisional Operations Director, Medicine and Critical Care and Deputy Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, GV Health.
“Our entire ED team is committed to providing safe and compassionate care for everyone who comes through the doors.”
Another common question is: Will I be seen quicker if I arrive at the Emergency Department by ambulance?
“Arriving by ambulance doesn’t get you seen more quickly unless you are more urgently unwell,” said Geoffrey Devine, Nurse Unit Manager, Emergency Department.
Other questions addressed by the series include alternative services for less urgent concerns, and queries related to waiting, treatment and care, and what to do after a visit to the ED.
