THIS spring, Kaiela Arts invites women of all backgrounds to slow down, conenct, and learn the art of weaving through a special five-week course led by acclaimed Aboriginal artist, Melinda Solomon.
The program will run every Monday from September 28 to October 26, from 6pm to 7.30pm, at the Kaiela Arts studio at 530 Wyndham Street, Shepparton.
Weaving has long been an important cultural practice for Aboriginal peoples, carrying knowledge, stories, identity and connection to Country across generations. Through this immersive five-week course, participants will learn traditional and contemporary weaving techniques while sharing stories, building skills and connecting with others in a welcoming and culturally rich environment.
Led by Melinda Solomon, a proud Eastern Kuku Yalanji and Girramay woman from Far North Queensland, the course will guide participants through foundational weaving techniques using natural and dyed raffia. Throughout the series, participants will create woven jewellery pieces and a small woven basket while exploring different weaving practices and cultural approaches.

The course is suitable for beginners as well as those looking to further develop their weaving skills. Registration includes five two-hour workshops, a Kaiela Arts weaving kit, raffia and all required equipment, as well as light refreshments
