A design that accentuates years of design excellence

“It’s more than just cars and trucks, it’s an experience as you move about” architect, Allister Sarris

THE thrill of discovery underlies the design philosophy that Allister Sarris has applied in his approach to the new Museum of Vehicle Evolution in Shepparton.

“It’s about not seeing everything at once, even the initial approach to a black glass door offers a new experience beyond,” said Mr Sarris.

“Once past this first entry point, visitors will be greeted by curved walls and dark spaces to add impact of what lies beyond.”

The exterior design takes on a minimalist approach while embracing a cubist style, aiming to evoke curiosity at each turn on one’s journey through the ranging displays contained in the museum.

A brief glimpse of fashion through the ages in the Loel Thomson display, to the rotating showcase of a vehicle on a turntable at the entry, to the curiosity aspect of a collection of old radios from bygone ages and beyond, to cars that span generations and heavy vehicles that reflect on the region’s development, to the rustic elements that encompass the Furphy collection.

Allister Sarris was first approached some years ago in a phone call leading to him being commissioned to undertake a preliminary then final design. Throughout the re-construction he played an integral role ensuring that the design integrity was maintained and not compromised through expediency.

“I wanted each visitor to move a few steps and be faced with another ‘wow’ moment as they journey through the facility.

“It is more than just cars and trucks; it is an experience as you move about, from the full height banners that convey some of the history of transport in the region, to the signage that went with that, the moving pictures down to iPad terminals that will provide additional information on particular exhibits.”

The new museum offers the opportunity for hours of reflection on the evolution of motoring while bringing together other features of contemporary life through the same era and Allister Sarris has painstakingly achieved that ‘wow’ sensation he wanted.

OPEN 7 DAYS 10AM TO 4PM
