READING to your children from birth is a wonderful way to help them develop language skills and set them on the right path for school readiness.

Rhyme & Story Time is a program offered throughout Goulburn Valley Libraries. The sessions are a great way to help your child become familiar with the library, have fun, socialise and enjoy books and stories.

Each session begins with some well-known nursery rhymes such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and give children the opportunity to sing and follow along the actions. This is followed by stories read out loud by the session facilitator.

Emma Kennedy, the Goulburn Valley Libraries’ children’s and youth services librarian, facilitates the sessions at the Shepparton and Tatura libraries and explained the benefits of attending Rhyme & Story Time.

“It is a great social activity; the children and parents sing, and we read stories together. It’s a great way to help children develop their literacy skills,” Emma said.

“At the end, children receive a craft pack activity to complete at home which links back to the story we read. This encourages conversation between families and is something for them to look forward to.”

Each Goulburn Valley Library run their own Rhyme & Story Time sessions. Please visit gvlibraries.com.au for further information including days and times, which vary at each location. For those times you’re unable to attend, you can jump online at gvlibraries.com.au/kidspace for virtual story time.
