THE CITY of Greater Shepparton is considering a draft budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year that includes a 3.5 percent rate increase for ratepayers. The increase is the maximum allowed by the State Government’s rate cap.
The council discussed the draft budget during their meeting on April 18, and ratepayers have until the end of May to provide feedback on the proposal.
To address concerns about the increase, councillors noted that there have been rate freezes in recent years.
Cr Geoff Dobson stated that in the first two years of their term, they implemented a zero-rate rise, and the recommended 3.5 percent increase for the third year would result in an average increase of 1.75 percent over three years.
Cr Anthony Brophy encouraged the public to provide feedback on the draft budget and the proposed rate increase.
“This really is being put out for public consultation and we really do require the public feedback before this can be adopted,” he said
He also explained that the increase was necessary due to inflation and costs associated with the floods. Overall, the council hopes to hear from the community before making a final decision on the budget.
Mayor, Cr Shane Sali defended the proposed increase, saying that, “We have aimed to provide a budget for the community that allows us to continue completing important infrastructure upgrades across the region and continue investing into the sporting and cultural events we all know and love, like the BMX, International Dairy Week and Converge on the Goulburn.”
“The 2023/2024 Draft Budget has looked at all the ways we can continue supporting our sporting groups, community clubs and local organisations to ensure the entire region is best supported for the next financial year,” he said.
Community submissions are open until 5pm on Thursday, May 18. To obtain a copy of the draft budget or for more information, visit www.greatershepparton.com.au
