THIS last week has seen a number of firsts for many people starting with a ground shaking earthquake last Wednesday.
Authorities say there is a chance of “significant aftershocks” in the upcoming weeks and months.
Tremors were felt across much of south-eastern Australia, from Melbourne through to Canberra with the epicentre reported to be around Mansfield.
Geoscience Australia said the first earthquake was detected in the Alpine National Park south-east of Mansfield and north of Rawson around 9:15am and was 10 kilometres deep.
It also says the quake is one of the largest earthquakes in eastern Australia since European settlement.
Several aftershocks have also been recorded. Little damage has been reported other than some falling bricks in Chapel Street, Melbourne and a number of businesses losing stock from falling off shelves.
