THE Mooroopna Steering Committee (MSC) will work with local Victoria SES, Greater Shepparton City Council, and the Centre for Excellence to deliver refresher training for the community in natural disasters.
With nearly four years since the October 2022 floods, it is an important time for people in the community to refresh their understanding of best practice, and useful skills and knowledge to have during disaster periods.
“Within Greater Shepparton, the reality is we face is that it’s when and not if the next flood affects our communities, this means we need refreshers for the community on a range of safety and disaster-focused issues. We are grateful to be the recipients of a grant from the Greater Shepparton City Council, and we are eager to work with local organisations and community to help deliver valuable training,” said MSC Chairperson Rowan Farren-Parnell.
“Having served as co-chair of the Mooroopna Flood Recovery Committee and having been stranded myself as a high-school student back in 2022, it became very clear that it’s important to focus on capacity building, because when disasters happen, people are your strongest asset.”
Community members are invited to attend the information evening on Thursday, September 10, at Mooroopna Hall, where there will be presentations from partnered organisations and volunteers talking with residents.
MSC understands that refreshing physical skills can be valuable to enable the activation of local volunteers and to promote community efforts during responses quickly. Mooroopna Market visitors will also have an activation on the 27th of September, where They are bringing hands-on learning to the community in partnership with SES education support.
