Drive so others survive

SAFER DRIVING... What if we lived in a world where every driver made safe choices and every road user arrived back home alive? This National Road Safety Week (May 17-24), the community is asked to Drive so Others Survive. Photo: Supplied

LET’S imagine a world where every journey ended safely. Where families never received the knock at the door that no one wants, and every driver made choices that protected everyone on the road.

National Road Safety Week 2026 (May 17–24) highlights the devastating impact of road trauma while encouraging safer driving habits under the theme, ‘Drive so others survive.’

Beginning Sunday, May 17, local road safety advocates are asking the community to remember the 1,300 people lost on Australian roads in 2025. Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community forever changed.

The week also reminds motorists that every decision behind the wheel matters. Community members are encouraged to take the ‘Drive so others survive’ pledge by driving as if loved ones are on the road ahead, removing distractions, avoiding speeding and never driving tired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The pledge also encourages drivers to slow down and protect vulnerable road users and roadside workers.

During the week there are a number of awareness days and activations, including National Walk to School Day, on Thursday, May 21.

RoadSafe Goulburn Valley’s Bill Winters encouraged locals to support the campaign and take the pledge, with 94 lives already lost on Victorian roads this year, the majority of them (58 lives) taken on rural roads.

“Every safer choice we make behind the wheel has the potential to save a life,” he said.

This National Road Safety Week, locals are encouraged to imagine safer roads, take the pledge and help ensure everyone gets home safely.
