Family treasure found after 20 years

A LOCAL Kyabram mum’s brilliant idea has resulted in her being reunited with her childhood cubby, built by her father around 30 years ago, after asking the Kyabram community if anyone recognised the structure from a photo.

Kasey James decided it was time to get a cubby house for her growing family, having spent countless hours as a little girl with her sister playing in her own.

INSTEAD of getting a new one, Kasey decided to post on Facebook in the hope that someone in the community still had the cubby on their property.

“Mum gave the cubby away to another family 20 years ago when my sister and I had stopped playing in it,” said Kasey.

“All she remembered though is that she gave it to a family who lived down the Avenue.”
Kasey’s dad, Jesse, lovingly built the cubby house in 1992 using left over supplies from their house extension project. It was a little version of their family home and even had connected power.

Kasey’s father was diagnosed with MS when she was only four years old and passed away when she was eight. The cubby is of great significance to the family as it was the last project Jesse worked on before he became ill.

“We were so happy that a lady saw the post and recognised the cubby, she sent a photo to us and it was the same one we cherished as children,” said Kasey.

“I have two little girls now myself and another babe due in February, I am beyond excited for them to have this special gift from their poppy in our own backyard.”

The lady in possession of the cubby has kindly said Kasey’s family can have it back and much to their delight, the cubby looks the same.

“It just needs a little TLC but that’s expected as it’s 30 years old, but it’s still the same lovely space built by dad that we enjoyed so much as little girls.”
