EMPLOYMENT can improve the welfare of all people and communities. Being able to support loved ones, pay bills, and contribute gives a sense of meaning essential for personal wellbeing.
Shepparton-based Jacob, 27, was unemployed for eight years and became “ready to throw in the towel” because he didn’t believe anyone would hire him. Jacob lives with Congenital Scoliosis which causes constant back pain. He is dyslexic and lives with depression and anxiety, gets nervous talking to people and has low confidence.
Jacob has studied certificates in Hospitality, Civil Construction, Rural Operations, and Chemical Handling. Despite education and past employment opportunities, Jacob struggled finding sustainable employment.
He applied for many jobs and rarely received replies causing him uncertainty about his future. Not having a driver’s licence has been a barrier towards gaining employment as well.
atWork Australia’s Shepparton office introduced Jacob to Brad, a job coach determined to find the right employer for him. When Jacob learned he was offered a job as a cleaner at market meats, he was so excited. He has since commenced an apprenticeship.
Jacob said, “I am happy to be working at a very supportive workplace with good people and a good environment. I am looking forward to going to work every day. I am proud that I am working and that I can afford to pay for more things for my partner and my family.”
In 10 years with employment providers, Brad was the first to make a real difference. Jacob says that Brad was always encouraging and supportive, and never gave up on him.
Brad said, “Jacob has come a long way. He was convinced that no one would hire him. It is great to see that his confidence has grown now that he is employed and that he is starting to believe in himself.”
