DRIVERS will be glad to know that the Murchison-Violet Town Road has been reopened, after being closed at the level crossing in Murchison East to progress construction of the crossing loop.

Crews worked around the clock to complete these works, allowing the road to reopen more than two days ahead of schedule. The road was reopened on Wednesday December 8, after being scheduled for Saturday December 11.

The closure enabled the new track to be constructed over the road and widening of the level crossing to cater for the additional line.

Upgrades to level crossings will ensure they are compatible with the new VLocity trains, while boosting safety for all passengers and road users. Once rail works are completed, trains will be able to travel up to 130km/h, while enabling nine return services to and from Melbourne every weekday.

While closed, new boom gates were installed, the turning lane was widened and the road has been rebuilt. Significant works occurred to reduce impacts to the grain industry during the closure.
