LEADING up to the 2024 Local Government elections in October, Greater Shepparton City Council have begun hosting information sessions for both candidates and voters.
Last year, an independent electoral structure review panel was appointed to review the electoral structure of Greater Shepparton City Council. As a result of this, Greater Shepparton will be divided into nine wards with one Councillor representing each ward.
Residents will only be able to vote for candidates who have nominated for the ward their voting entitlement relates to. For most voters, this will be the ward they live in. Candidates will also only be able to nominate for one ward.
Council has already hosted the first general community-based info session in Mooroopna, with sessions in Tatura and Shepparton planned for potential candidates to get a better understanding of what the role of a councillor entails. These sessions will give insight into time commitments, responsibilities, and general requirements under the Local Government Act 2020. They will also provide information to voters on the new ward structure.

There will also be a Women Candidate Information Session which will explore perceived barriers and flexibility available to support all councillors. Attendees at this session will hear from guest speaker, Member for Shepparton and former mayor and councillor, Kim O’Keeffe.
