Oscar Piastri takes home Formula 2 world title

AUSTRALIAN motorsport masetro Oscar Piastri has become Australia’s newest world champion after winning the Formula 2 world title in Abu Dhabi.

The young gun, who has strong family ties to Shepparton, placed 10th for the sprint and needed to place fifth or higher in order to claim the title.

Piastri started the race strongly and climbed to sixth position by the end of the first lap. With only four laps left, he challenged his teammate, Robert Schwartzman and nailed an impressive pass that earned the Aussie third place.

Indian racing driver, Jehan Daruvala won the race but Piastri has commanded the season in F2 so strongly that he had locked in the title with two races left.

Piastri’s F2 win is the 20-year-old’s third consecutive junior category title. In 2020, Piastri was the F3 champion and in 2019, Formula Renault Eurocup champion. Last month, he was announced as the 2022 reserve driver for Alpine F1, finishing a year on a high point and racing to even greater opportunities.
