Paying it forward

WHAT goes around comes around, is true enough but even better is, kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

Living up to one of these adages in day-to-day life is remarkable for any person, but to be a shining example of both, is exceptional.

Two people who fit this description are Joe Di Conza and his mother Tina, who own and run the iconic BP Truckstop and service station at 176 Numurkah Road.

After sadly losing sister and daughter, Alfina, in 1991 and wanting to give back to the compassionate staff at Goulburn Valley Hospice who cared for her, the Di Conza family decided to donate ongoing fuel to the organisation.

Tragically following his daughter in 2003, Pat passed away also while in the care of GV Hospice.

“They looked after my sister when she was dying in 1991 and they looked after Dad in 2003. So, they are the most beautiful people,” said Joe, “…and we wanted to give back to their generosity.”

In recent times, Joe and Tina have had to cease their donation of fuel to GV Hospice as the organisation’s fleet of cars has grown bigger, but Joe and his mother continue to donate to the palliative care service where they can.

“Now we donate in other ways, we donate items from the shop when we have items in bulk or are near their used by date.”
With over 25 years of donating fuel and other goods to GV Hospice, ‘beautiful people,’ sounds like an appropriate label all round.
