GREEN bins have been a part of the Greater Shepparton landscape now for five years, and over the next few weeks, residents can expect to receive their next instalment of complimentary purple compostable bags to contain waste material.

Residents have clearly demonstrated a commitment to improved waste management including sorting and placing waste in the appropriate bin and the use of these purple bags for food scraps. With this support, Greater Shepparton has achieved great results with contamination rates continuing to drop for the green lid bin. According to Council, in the past five years about 39,000 tonnes of garden and food waste have been diverted from landfill.

Greater Shepparton City Council director of infrastructure, Phil Hoare, said residents’ use of the degradable purple bags has significantly contributed to the success of composting in the municipality.

“It has not only saved ratepayers’ money but it also has wonderful benefits for our environment and economy,” he said.

If you do not receive your complimentary roll of bags by the end of February please contact Council on 5832 9700.
