LOBBY groups and supporters of recreational duck hunting are praising the State Government’s decision not to ban duck and quail hunting in Victoria.

Member for Northern Victoria, Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell, has welcomed their decision to allow duck hunting to continue, saying that, “Duck hunting is a legitimate outdoor recreational activity that has been enjoyed by generations of hunters.

“Not only is duck hunting a legitimate hobby, the economic benefits to local economies from hunters visiting regional hunting areas, including in my electorate of Northern Victoria Region, is significant.

“Many hunters also play an important role in the conservation and sustainability of our wetlands.

“While I suspect Labor’s decision not to ban hunting is to pacify their friends in the trade union movement, I welcome the announcement nonetheless,” Ms Tyrrell said.

Research from The Australia Institute in 2019 showed that hunting contributed $8.1M from Victorian game licence holders across all animal groups (deer, duck, quail and pest animals) in Greater Shepparton. Duck hunting expenditure in Greater Shepparton was $2.2M.
