THE Greater Shepparton City Council is undertaking major repair works to a section of riverbank along the Goulburn River, near the Aquamoves car park. The repairs are necessary due to significant damage and erosion caused by the October 2022 floods. The primary aim of the project is to secure the riverbank and ensure the safety of road and car park users.

Gary Randhawa, the Director of Infrastructure at the Council, emphasised the proactive approach being taken to safeguard the infrastructure while respecting the natural surroundings. The Engineering Services team is finalising the design for the Tom Collins Drive Bank Stabilisation, which includes two sections of rip rap rock bank stabilisations and the renewal of an existing rip rap section next to the drainage pump station.

To facilitate the project, the Council has employed the use of drone technology for the first time in one of its infrastructure projects. The drone surveys the riverbank, providing cost savings and eliminating safety risks associated with manual surveying in challenging environments.

The project is expected to be completed during the 2023/2024 financial year and is financially supported by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and the Victorian Government’s Flood Support Fund.

In the meantime, interim safety measures have been implemented to protect footpath and car park users. Fencing and bollards have been installed, closing off five Aquamoves parking bays and the loading bay closest to the riverbank. The road has also been temporarily relocated further from the bank to reduce risk for vehicles and pedestrians. Asset inspectors will regularly monitor the site to address any changes in the bank’s stability.
